What’s Bugging You?, ages 4 – 6

Do you find bugs creepy? During this camp, we’ll learn about insects and other small invertebrates to discover how fascinating they actually are! You’ll be amazed at all the strange behaviors and interesting body parts you’ll find on insects and other crawling creatures. Learn about their life cycle. Go outside to collect these tiny creatures in the garden, field, and Bear Creek. Study bugs under magnification. Create a 3-D insect sculpture. During this camp, we’ll put ourselves in an insect’s shoes – all six of them - by playing fun games, doing arts and crafts, and having science fun.

Amusement Park Science, ages 7 – 10

From roller coasters to Ferris wheels, who doesn’t love amusement parks? During this hands-on, project based camp, you will discover the physics behind all of your favorite rides. Learn about centripetal force from the carousel, Newton’s Laws of Motion from bumper cars, and potential and kinetic energy from roller coasters. Build, play, explore and more!

Dig’n the Past: Dinosaurs, Fossils, and Rocks that Rock!, ages 4 - 6

Let’s explore the earth’s past through dinosaur lore, fossil making, and rock hunts! We’ll simulate a paleontology dig, measure a brontosaurus, build a volcano, collect rocks, and more, in this hands-on class woven through with songs, stories, and games.

Did you know that Peregrine Falcons can fly up to 240 miles per hour or that Great Horned Owls have the ability to stare for hours looking for prey? In this camp, we will explore the fascinating world of Birds of Prey. Learn to hoot like an owl, tear apart owl pellets and put back together rodent skeletons, search out raptors, compete in the Raptor Olympics, and much more. Sticky Slippery Messy Mix-y Texture Camp, ages 4 – 6

Become a steward for the environment! Make a “trash” pizza, participate in reclamation bowling, and craft a bird feeder from a fruit bag. You are the Master Chef in the kitchen this week! You’ll learn the importance of eating healthy and making delicious food that’s fun to eat. Make fun-shaped pancakes, fruit smoothies, crispy berry skewers, home made ice-cream, pretzel sparklers, ABC snack mix and more. Be prepared to share your own favorite meals and snacks with the rest of us and to publish your very own cookbook. So grab your apron and appetite and let’s get cookin’!

Journey through the universe without ever leaving camp. Study the stars, build a rocket, and get ready to explore the universe! You’ll need a safe way to land though, so be sure to design a reentry vehicle that keeps your astronaut (Egg-bert) safe. Once you land on Mars, you’ll need a car to help you explore. Liquids, Solids, and Other Messy Mixtures, ages 7 – 10

Magic All Around, ages 4 – 6

There is magic all around us, especially at this summer camp! We will discover how to do magical activities using simple science ideas. Learn how to levitate objects, defy gravity, and make things disappear and reappear. We’ll even get to pet a rabbit! Face painting, story telling, and magic wands will part of the fun as we put on a performance for parents on Friday.

Become a true Master of Force on this scientific adventure as we conduct experiments that model the force phenomena! Find magnetic, gravitational, and electrostatic force and search for evidence to explain why they exist. We’ll fly a 155-foot kite, create a magnet circus, and an anti-gravity device as we explore force.

Discover the wild and wacky ways animals are adapted for survival. Meet the Star-Nosed Mole, Frill-Necked Lizard, and Blob Fish. Dissect a squid to uncover its secret weapon. Come explore the wild and cultivated plants that grow all around us. Learn all about what it takes to grow a successful garden and to harvest your garden goodies. Build it Bigger, ages 7 – 10

How do we build skyscrapers and bridges? What’s the strongest shape we can use? Explore science’s role in engineering and how invention and creativity can lead to fantastic outcomes. In this camp, we’ll experiment with shapes and materials and investigate different methods and techniques for construction. You’ll turn simple newspaper into a geodesic dome large enough to sit in, construct bridges, and build airplanes too. Your challenge is to build it bigger!

Take a close-up look at garden plants and animals as we discover the secret lives of butterflies, birds, insects, flowers, and more! We’ll make plant-based art projects, like a shaker, sunprint, and leaf rubbing. We’ll take a field trip to North Mountain Park to explore the gardens and natural area. Come on this awesome adventure as we explore the building blocks of life – cells! We’ll use microscopes to look at both plant and animal cells, including our own cheek cells, make an edible cell out of Jello, extract DNA from strawberries and become a cell detective as we collect samples to see what’s growing around ScienceWorks.

Tree Frog Treks Wild Science! Summer Camp, ages 4 – 10

Come exploring with Tree Frog Treks - grab your goggles, strap your shoes on tight, and get ready to GET OUT and GET DIRTY! Everyday campers will play outdoors, do hands-on science experiments, create art projects, and learn new ways to save, preserve, and maintain our home! At Tree Frog Treks, we make science fun while exploring and adventuring in nature. Meet and greet rescued reptile and amphibian Animal Ambassadors like Savannah the Monitor Lizard, Pyro the Arizona Mountain Kingsnake and Ivan the Tortoise. Create hands-on science experiments and art, like launching handheld rockets, making test tube lava lamps, and creating a model of San Francisco for the Earthquake Shakedown! We will investigate a range of science disciplines from: Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics and Science in the News.

Camp Lego Robotics, ages 9-13

Lego Mindstorm: Where engineering meets technology. Have fun as you construct Legos all week. Work in pairs to solve challenges by building and programming robots using the Lego Mindstorm equipment. Fantastic Forensics, ages 13-15

Who did it? Become a forensic scientist as you analyze the evidence of a fictional crime scene. Examine blood stains, identify and process fingerprints, analyze hair and fiber samples, make casts of footprints, and analyze handwriting samples. Work together, gather clues, and solve the crime.

Search and Discover Scavenger Hunt, ages 6–8

Do you love scavenger hunts? There's plenty to explore outside at Southern Oregon University in the summer! Come learn about the trees, flowers and other ‘treasures’ that you can find on this beautiful campus. Each day you will receive a list of things to search for and discover. Then you’ll go inside and write and draw about your findings in your own ‘SOU Explorers Journal.’ Each day will end with fun outdoor games!

Super Slimy Science, ages 6–8

This class is oozing with fun! In this hands-on gooey class, you will explore the science of really gross things like sticky slime. You’ll look at what animals make and do to help them survive—things that make us say “Yuck!” You will make slime, use microscopes, explore the creepy and crawly, and have a squishy good time!

Come explore the world of veterinary medicine. You will learn behavior training and the basics of the care and handling of a variety of animals. Explore the different professions in animal welfare and what it takes to become one yourself. A variety of professionals will visit the class for an “ask the expert” and activity session. You will also visit a local veterinary clinic to spend “a day in the life” of a veterinarian.

Young Medics, ages 11 - 14

Get your hands on healthcare as you learn about the intriguing world of medicine. You will learn basic human anatomy and physiology as you learn what it’s like to be a doctor or a nurse. You will be introduced to Sim Man, a high fidelity human patient simulator and you will have the opportunity to practice with a variety of auditory simulators to gain an understanding of health assessment techniques.

Exploring Genius

Join me in studying the science of Einstein, Galileo, and Newton. We will
experience the answers with hands on projects
and experiments.
Each camp has three parts. For example, Galileo will meet June 21, 22, 23
from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. Students can come to just one part or all three. Each part is $50. Camps are limited to 2-4 students, so reserve your space soon.

Exploring Galileo:
How did he accurately measure time without a watch or sun dial? How did he prove the planets rotate around the sun? Why is he called the Father of Science?

Exploring Newton:
What did Ancient Greek Fables teach him about chemistry? What can he teach us about light, gravity, and the motion of the tides? What did he mean when he said, "I am standing on the shoulders of Dwarves?"

Exploring Einstein:
What does E=MC² really mean? What were his epic ideas about space, time, matter, and energy? What is relative about relativity and why do we care?
